I’ve been offering Mommy & Me Mini Sessions in Newburgh, Indiana for over a decade now. In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to spotlight some of the incredible mothers I had the opportunity to work with this year. They are all such amazing mamas and I wanted to share their advice and insight into motherhood. Over the next 10 days I will be sharing a couple mothers, their images and their advice, every day on socials and the blog. My hope is that new and existing moms can either gather advice or feel a little less alone in this crazy thing called motherhood.

LINDSEY

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

2 children, Kaplan age 12 and Margaret age 7

What is the best part of motherhood?

There isn’t just one “best” thing about motherhood—it’s more like a collection of moments that sneak up on you and end up meaning everything. Watching a tiny human grow into their own person—and knowing you’re their safe place through all of it—creates a kind of love that’s hard to compare to anything else. It’s not just big milestones like first steps or first words; it’s the everyday things: the way they reach for you when they’re tired, the random “I love you,” or how your presence alone can calm them down.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?

The mom guilt is the worst and the constant worry you aren’t enough or doing the right thing. Also the bittersweet of teaching them to grow and live without you one day and knowing you can’t live without them and “setting them free” into the world. Also the worry of something happening to them.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about parenting?

The days are long but the years are short is so incredibly true. Soak in the moments, even the hard ones. Take the trips. Let them experience new places and things. It’s so much fun.

If you could give a new mother one piece of advice, what would it be?

Take a breath. Ask for help when you need it. And take time for yourself. If you don’t take the time for yourself to relax you can’t be the best version of yourself for your family.

ANICIA

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

I have two kids. Randall, age 6 and Lyndi, age 3.

What is the best part of motherhood?

Being the safe space my kids can run to. If I’m sitting down, they’re likely on top of me. Some days that can feel like a lot, but it really is such a blessing to feel so loved.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?

Wanting nothing more than to be all my kids need me to be at all times, and knowing that’s not always possible. Juggling a small business while staying at home is not for the faint hearted!

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about parenting?

To give myself grace every day and enjoy all the little moments. It goes so very fast.

If you could give a new mother one piece of advice, what would it be?

As long as your kids know you love them fiercely, that’s all that matters. Give yourself grace on the hard days, and look at things from their perspective. They likely don’t see the negatives you see. They will just see a mother who loves them deeply.
