I’ve been offering Mommy & Me Mini Sessions in Newburgh, Indiana for over a decade now. In honor of Mother’s Day, I wanted to spotlight some of the incredible mothers I had the opportunity to work with this year. They are all such amazing mamas and I wanted to share their advice and insight into motherhood. Over the next 10 days I will be sharing a couple mothers, their images and their advice, every day on socials and the blog. My hope is that new and existing moms can either gather advice or feel a little less alone in this crazy thing called motherhood.

JENNI

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

I have two kiddos! A boy who is 7.5 and a girl who is 3.5

What is the best part of motherhood?

The constant evolution of children. Having the privilege of watching them grow and change. It’s magical. They’re so different from each other but so awesome and fantastic in their own special ways. From their first smiles to their first goal they make, it’s those moments that make every second worth it a million times over. It’s very much “Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all.” You say bye over and over again but yet a new version pops up that you also love and embrace with every fiber of your being.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?

The unseen mental load. It’s 24/7 and can be draining if you work too much or don’t establish boundaries with people outside your home. We all have that first baby and just add them in to our lives without changing anything else at first. You learn along the way the right amount of what can be taken from you outside of being a mom……and what cannot.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about parenting?

“Your living is the teaching”

As in instead of lecturing about this or that, if we model kindness, forgiveness, empathy, love, patience, etc… by practicing it ourselves, they will follow in our footsteps. None of this “do as I say, not as I do” stuff but actually putting in the work and improving those parts of ourselves we know we need to work on can our kids see we are human too. Now no, none of this is easy but I believe it’s what Jesus had in mind when children came to mind. They make you want to be a better person and if you can do that, you better your kids too.

If you could give a new mother one piece of advice, what would it be?

Go put a glider in your favorite room in the house and rock that baby! Just sit and love them, talk to them, make them smile and soak up every second because it’s fleeting. Never was there a faster season than the newborn stage. You’re tired anyway, so forget all the mess of dishes or laundry and rock them in your arms like it’s your job….because it is!

MELISSA

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

One child, 5-year-old daughter

What is the best part of motherhood?

For me, its having a built-in miniature best friend. Anytime I’m having a bad day, she always makes it better.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?

Making sure you are making the best choices/decisions for your child when they can’t make those choices on their own.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about parenting?

Dont let others tell you how to raise your own child.

If you could give a new mother one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don’t go broke buying all new items and new clothes. They grow so fast and you find out half of the stuff you bought was never used! Also, get all the photos and videos, viewing these later in their life brings up such good memories.

CHEYENNE

How many children do you have and what are their ages?

One and she is three!

What is the best part of motherhood?

The giggles, playing, listening to her imagination, and seeing her see the magic in every day things.

What is the hardest part about being a mother?

The fact that you put every ounce of patience into your little human and the rest of the word thinks you are rude when really you are so out touched and have zero patience left. Especially to give to someone you don’t know.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received about parenting?

Trust your mom gut. You know what is best for you little.

If you could give a new mother one piece of advice, what would it be?

Do what works for you and your baby! It will be right for you.
